In short: There is no universally best merchandise material. Choose based on intended use, durability, care, branding method, available evidence, budget and realistic end-of-life pathways.
How to compare materials
A material name is only the beginning. Two products described as cotton canvas can perform very differently because of fibre quality, fabric weight, weave, dye, finish, construction and hardware. Recycled content can reduce demand for virgin resources, but it does not automatically make a finished product recyclable. Natural fibres may break down under suitable conditions, while coatings and blended components can change that outcome.
For branded merchandise, we assess materials against five practical questions:
- Function: Will it perform for the intended use?
- Useful life: Can it withstand the expected frequency, load and care?
- Composition: What is it made from, including coatings, linings and trims?
- Evidence: Are composition or certification claims documented?
- End of life: Can components be reused, repaired, recycled or allowed to break down in a realistic system?
Natural and recycled fibres
Cotton and cotton canvas
Cotton is a natural plant fibre. Densely woven cotton canvas can be durable, repairable and comfortable to carry, making it useful for tote bags, conference bags, travel pieces and everyday accessories. Cotton cultivation and processing can involve significant water, land, energy and agricultural inputs. Dyes, prints, waxes and water-resistant finishes also affect the finished fabric.
Choose cotton canvas when feel, appearance, printability and repairability matter. Ask about fabric weight and construction rather than relying on the word “canvas” alone.
Recycled cotton
Recycled cotton is made from pre-consumer cutting waste, manufacturing waste or post-consumer textiles. Mechanical recycling opens and shreds the source material back into fibre. This reduces the need for some virgin fibre and can keep existing cotton in use, but the process shortens fibre length. Recycled cotton is therefore often blended with virgin cotton or another fibre to achieve the required strength and yarn quality.
Ask for the recycled percentage, whether the input is pre-consumer or post-consumer, and evidence such as a recognised recycled-content certification. A recycled-cotton claim applies to the stated textile component, not automatically to threads, linings, coatings or trims.
Organic cotton
Organic cotton is cotton grown to an organic agricultural standard and verified by an accredited certification system. Organic standards restrict genetically engineered seed and specified synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, but “organic” does not mean impact-free. Yield, water source, location, processing, dyeing, transport and product life still matter.
Organic fibre certification relates primarily to how the crop is grown. For a finished textile claim, ask how the fibre is traced through spinning, weaving, dyeing and manufacturing and which certification covers the final product.
Jute
Jute is a strong, textured plant fibre commonly used for bags and structured packaging. It grows quickly and can require fewer inputs than some crops, although processing, backing, lamination, dyeing and transport still contribute to impact. Untreated jute can biodegrade under appropriate conditions, but a finished product may include synthetic threads, coatings or handles.
Jute suits projects seeking natural texture and structure. It can show variation and may not be appropriate where repeated washing or a very refined print surface is required.
Jute felt
Jute felt is made by bonding jute fibres into a dense layer. In insulated bags it can provide structure and insulation as an alternative to conventional plastic foam. The binder and full product construction should be checked: once assembled into a multi-material product, the finished item may be difficult to recycle.
Waxed canvas
Waxed canvas adds a protective finish to cotton canvas to improve water resistance, character and service life. The coating makes conventional recycling difficult and slows biodegradation. It is selected for durability and ageing rather than a simple end-of-life claim. Rewaxing and care can extend use.
Recycled and technical materials
Recycled polyester (RPET)
RPET is polyester made from recycled PET feedstock, often plastic bottles. Using recycled feedstock can reduce demand for virgin fossil-based material and divert existing material into another use. RPET remains plastic: it does not biodegrade, can shed microfibres and is often difficult to recycle again after it becomes a coated, printed or multi-component product.
RPET can be appropriate where light weight, water resistance, colour consistency or technical performance is required. Claims should state the recycled percentage, the component covered and the evidence available rather than implying the material has no impact.
Polyester and nylon
Virgin polyester and nylon are durable synthetic fibres with strong performance, consistent colour and broad availability. They rely on fossil-based feedstocks and persist in the environment. We compare them with recycled alternatives and natural fibres, but may recommend them where product life and performance would otherwise be compromised.
Washable cellulose paper
Washable paper is a paper-like sheet made primarily from cellulose, often combined with binders, colourants or surface treatments to improve flexibility and resistance to handling or washing. It can create a distinctive natural look for accessories, labels and packaging, but compositions and care instructions vary between manufacturers.
Washable paper is not automatically home-compostable or biodegradable as a finished product. Those claims require documentation for the exact grade, its additives and the intended disposal conditions.
Tyvek®
Tyvek may look like paper, but it is not paper or cellulose. DuPont identifies Tyvek as a synthetic nonwoven material made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) fibres. It is lightweight, durable, water resistant and printable, which can make it useful for pouches, labels and accessories.
Tyvek does not biodegrade. Clean products made entirely from Tyvek may be technically recyclable with flexible-HDPE streams, but local facilities do not always accept them and printing, adhesives, linings or mixed components can prevent practical recycling.
Yulex® natural-rubber foam
Yulex is a natural-rubber material developed as a plant-based replacement for neoprene and is used in Patagonia’s neoprene-free wetsuits. Yulex states that its foam manufacturers use PEFC- and/or FSC-certified natural rubber. For bags and coolers, natural-rubber foam can provide cushioning or insulation while reducing reliance on conventional neoprene feedstocks.
We will use the Yulex name only where the supplier documentation confirms genuine Yulex material. If a product uses another natural-rubber foam, it should be described by its verified composition and certification instead. The finished foam, adhesives and laminated layers should not be called biodegradable without product-specific evidence.
Silicone
Silicone is a durable synthetic polymer valued for flexibility and resistance to heat and cold. It is used in reusable drinkware components, food-storage products, seals and accessories. A long useful life and repeated use can be a practical benefit, but silicone is not biodegradable and consumer recycling pathways are limited in most locations.
For food or beverage use, request documentation for the exact finished product and intended contact conditions. “Food-grade silicone” should be supported by supplier compliance evidence, not inferred from appearance or feel.
Foam insulation
Foams are widely used in coolers and protective products because they are lightweight and effective. Conventional synthetic foams are generally difficult to recycle once laminated into finished goods. Depending on the performance brief, alternatives may include jute felt, recycled-content insulation or verified natural-rubber foam. Thermal performance, thickness, durability, price and minimum order quantity must still be considered.
Metals, coatings and whole-product construction
304 stainless steel
Grade 304 is a widely used austenitic stainless steel, also identified as UNS S30400 or EN 1.4301. It offers good corrosion resistance for many everyday products and can provide a long service life in drinkware, lunchware and reusable accessories. Stainless steel is recyclable where metal-recovery systems are available.
Grade 304 is not immune to corrosion, especially under prolonged salt or chloride exposure. For drinkware and food-contact products, confirm the steel grade and request documentation for the complete item, including internal surfaces, lids, seals and coatings.
Powder coating and lower-VOC finishes
Powder coating applies a dry polymer powder that is cured onto a surface. Compared with many conventional liquid coatings, powder systems can avoid traditional solvents, produce very low volatile organic compound emissions during application and allow unused overspray to be reclaimed in suitable production systems. They can also provide a durable finish that helps protect metal products.
Standard powder coatings are polymer finishes and should not be described as biodegradable. If a supplier offers a coating described as biodegradable or bio-based, we require the product name, composition, test method and certification before using that claim. Finish durability, food-contact requirements and the effect on end-of-life recycling should be reviewed for the exact product.
Linings, coatings, inks and hardware
Finished merchandise is rarely made from one material. Food-contact linings, waterproof coatings, zips, buckles, threads, labels, inks and adhesives all affect durability and end of life. TPU linings can offer flexibility and performance, while PEVA and other options have different cost and technical characteristics. Metal hardware may last well but adds weight; plastic hardware may be lighter and resist corrosion.
For custom projects, we specify the whole construction and identify priority components based on the brief. If a restricted-substances declaration, food-contact document or precise fibre composition is required, include it in the procurement criteria before quoting.
Standards and certification
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
GOTS is a voluntary textile-processing standard, not a fibre. It covers certified organic fibres and sets requirements for processing inputs, environmental management, traceability and social criteria through certified stages of the textile supply chain.
A cotton product should only be described or labelled as GOTS-certified when the relevant certified product and supply-chain documentation supports that claim. Organic cotton fibre alone does not automatically make the finished item GOTS-certified.
Recycled-content evidence
For recycled cotton, RPET and other recycled inputs, ask what percentage is recycled, whether it is pre-consumer or post-consumer, which component the claim covers and whether recognised chain-of-custody documentation is available. Certification does not make a product impact-free, but it can make a specific content claim more traceable.
Product-specific compliance
Food contact, restricted substances, colourfastness, waterproofing and performance are product-specific. The correct evidence depends on how and where the item will be used. Tell us which standards or documents are mandatory at the briefing stage so they can be included in sourcing and approval.
Understanding common claims
Biodegradable
This means a material can be broken down by microorganisms under specified conditions. It does not mean every finished product will quickly or safely disappear in landfill, the ocean or a home compost.
Compostable
Compostable materials require defined conditions and timeframes. “Industrially compostable” and “home compostable” are not interchangeable, and local collection systems determine whether the pathway is actually available.
Recycled
Ask what percentage is recycled, whether it is pre-consumer or post-consumer, which component the claim covers and whether evidence is available.
Recyclable
Technical recyclability is not the same as practical recyclability. Mixed fabrics, coatings, trims and lack of local collection can prevent a product from entering a real recycling stream.
Frequently asked questions
Which material is best for branded merchandise?
There is no single best option. The right material depends on the job it must do, expected lifespan, care, branding, budget and end-of-life considerations.
Is recycled polyester still plastic?
Yes. RPET reduces demand for virgin plastic feedstock but remains a synthetic plastic and does not biodegrade.
Is Tyvek the same as washable paper?
No. Washable paper is generally cellulose-based, while Tyvek is a synthetic HDPE material. They can look similar, but their composition, care and end-of-life pathways are different.
Is Yulex the material Patagonia uses in wetsuits?
Yes. Patagonia identifies its current wetsuits as using Yulex natural rubber. We only use the Yulex brand name for merchandise when supplier documentation confirms the material is genuine Yulex.
Is powder coating biodegradable?
Standard powder coating should not be assumed to be biodegradable. It may offer low-solvent application and a durable finish, but any biodegradable or bio-based claim needs evidence for the exact coating.
Is silicone recyclable?
Silicone can be recycled through specialist processes, but consumer collection and recycling are not widely available. Durability and repeated use are usually the more realistic benefits to assess.
Is cotton always the more sustainable choice?
No. Cotton is natural and repairable, but cultivation and processing have impacts. A poorly used cotton product is not automatically preferable to a durable product made from another material.
What does GOTS certify?
GOTS covers organic fibres and defined environmental, chemical, traceability and social requirements through certified textile processing stages. A finished product needs appropriate certification evidence before it is marketed as GOTS-certified.
